Honey – Natural Remedy For Kid’s Coughs

Does your child wake himself up repeatedly each night because of a bad cough? Upper respiratory infections can make sleeping very difficult for kids.

It turns out that Mother Nature’s sweetest treat may also help children enjoy more zzzz’s each night. Buckwheat honey has been found to be a more effective remedy for children’s coughs than dextromethorphan (DM), the ingredient in common over-the-counter cough medicine.

A study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine concluded that honey gave children more relief from upper respiratory symptoms than DM or no treatment.1

Thanks to bees we have a safe and effective cough remedy for children over one. Remember to never give infants honey because of the risk of infantile botulism.

Healthy Vancouver Island Kids Are Well Rested

Healthy Vancouver Island Kids Are Well Rested

Getting an adequate amount of sleep is essential to the health of Vancouver Island kids. During sleep, muscles, skin, and bones actually grow and repair themselves. The immune system is recharged during sleep, so this is especially important during the Victoria & Vancouver cold and flu season. Because the brain processes the stimulus and information it received during the previous day, sleep is crucial for healthy brain development.

Parents in the worldwide, Vancouver Island, and North America areas should do everything they can to make bedtime work for their family. One of the most important things is for Victoria & Vancouver parents to model healthy sleep behavior for their children.

If you want your child to follow a consistent bedtime schedule, you’ll need to follow one yourself.

It’s also important to check out your child’s sleep environment in your Victoria & Vancouver home. What is the temperature and noise level of the room? White noise might help your child sleep better. Fans or humidifiers that can be purchased at any North America Wal-Mart, Vancouver Island drug store, or worldwide Target store are inexpensive and do the job well.

Give your child a screen-free room in which to fall asleep. This means no TVs, computers, iPods, or cell phones. In fact, turning off all screens an hour or two before bedtime will help the whole family fall asleep on time.

Make sure you include the children in planning a bedtime routine and then stick to it. If they have trouble saying goodbye after you’ve tucked them in, try giving them a special security object like a blanket or stuffed animal to fall asleep with.

Keep Your Victoria & Vancouver Kids Fit

Keep Your Victoria & Vancouver Kids Fit An important element in any British Columbia child’s health is physical activity. Most young Vancouver Island children are busy exploring their world and don’t need any encouragement to run, skip, or jump. But spontaneous activities like these may decline during the tween years when most North America children begin spending more time on indoor activities like TV watching, video game playing, and texting.

As Victoria & Vancouver parents we need to be more proactive during these years to make sure our kids are physically fit. Helping them choose a popular Victoria & Vancouver sport such as soccer, baseball, or skiing is an excellent way to encourage activity.

Provide active toys such as jump ropes, hula hoops, bikes, and roller blades and limit sedentary activities like movie watching.

Model the physically active behavior you want your Vancouver Island child to have. Take walks with your kids. Take advantage of Victoria & Vancouver recreational options. Go snow boarding, swimming, or hiking with them to show them that being active and fit is important to you.

Active North America kids need healthy between-meal snacks such as dried fruit, nuts, string cheese, and protein bars. As a child’s health advocate in British Columbia, I would love to share one of my favorite super-nutritious snacks with you. Please contact me today!

Prevent Classroom Sickness In North America

Prevent Classroom Sickness In North America

To curb the spread of viruses, lice, and other kid’s health threats in North America schools, parents need to teach their kids proper hygiene practices and review them on a regular basis.

Here is a rundown of some unwelcome classroom visitors and steps to combat them:

  • Head lice: wash hands frequently, don’t share combs, hats, scarves.
  • Ringworm (skin infection with circular lesions, not actually caused by worms): keep sores covered, don’t share combs or clothing.
  • Pinkeye: vigilant hand washing can help stop the spread. North America parents should keep kids home if their eyes are pink or draining fluid.
  • Colds, flu, strep: anti-bacterial wipes and no-rinse hand sanitizer can supplement soap and water scrubbing. Remind kids not to share drinks, snacks, lotion, chap stick, and lip gloss.

North America children who know and practice these safeguards will be prepared when the next H1N1 threat visits Victoria & Vancouver.

I promote children’s health issues in Victoria & Vancouver. For information on my health business, contact me today.

Fun Exercise Ideas For Kids

Fun Exercise Ideas For worldwide Kids

When I was growing up, my friends and I never ran out of things to do, and most of our activities provided at least a little bit of exercise. I have fond memories of playing kick-the-can on warm summer nights and swimming at the old community pool.

Unfortunately, many of today’s kids spend hours daily in sedentary activities. Exercise benefits our physical, mental, and emotional health. Perhaps you might enjoy participating in some of these with your son or daughter.

Fun exercise suggestions:

  • Fly a kite (It’s even more fun if you sing the song from Mary Poppins while you are doing it.)
  • Wheels: bike, skateboard, longboard, inline skates, rip stick, scooter (don’t forget a helmet!)
  • Rake the yard
  • Hula hoop (The worldwide Wal-Mart carried them last time I checked.)
  • Martial arts
  • Juggling
  • Hacky sack
  • Badminton
  • Weight lifting
  • Hopscotch
  • Jump-roping
  • Tug-of-war

I am concerned about the state of children’s health and like to share information about health issues in my blog. If you are looking for a low-fat, high antioxidant chocolate product that tastes like a diet-buster, call me today. I sell Healthy chocolates and high antioxidant chocolates protein meal replacement shake, two tasty treats that help my kids stay healthy.

Vancouver Island Kids and Bug Bite Dangers

Vancouver Island Kids and Bug Bite Dangers Healthy Vancouver Island kids love to play outdoors, but British Columbia parents need to be aware of a potential danger: bug bites. The ability to tell a harmful bug bite from a benign one is essential to keeping your active Vancouver Island child safe.

Flea bites are common in North America, Vancouver Island, and worldwide. They appear as a rash on a child’s skin with individual raised spots that might have a puncture in the center. Vancouver Island children will usually complain of itchy skin if they have been bitten by fleas.

Bee and wasp stings, also common in the Victoria & Vancouver area, can be differentiated by the number of stings. Bees only sting once, lose their stinger and then die, whereas wasps (as well as hornets and yellow jackets) can sting multiple times. British Columbia homes often harbor wasp nests under the eaves.

The sting of a fire ant will usually cause Victoria & Vancouver kids to have a red hive that may develop into a itchy, pus-filled lesion. Chiggers, which are tiny arachnids, cause multiple itchy red welts on kids’ skin. Check your local Vancouver Island drugstore for itch-relief products and watch the welts for signs of infection.

Ticks bites will cause an uncomfortable redness on your Victoria & Vancouver child’s skin and may even swell. Since ticks can carry harmful diseases, you should contact your Vancouver Island area pediatrician if you child has had a tick bite.

Treating Vancouver Island Kids’ Minor Cuts And Bumps

Treating Vancouver Island Kids' Minor Cuts And Bumps

Spending lots of time outside is important for healthy kids in Vancouver Island, and with all that outdoor adventure come the inevitable bumps, scrapes, and cuts. But parents in the North America, Vancouver Island, and worldwide areas shouldn’t fear, all you need to know are a few simple steps for treating your children’s minor injuries.

A minor cut should stop bleeding on its own, but using a clean cloth and applying gentle pressure may be necessary.

Once bleeding has stopped, rinse the wound with water and pull out any debris with alcohol-cleansed tweezers. The area around the wound can be cleaned with mild soap and a washcloth, no hydrogen peroxide or alcohol is necessary.

Once the wound is clean, apply a thin layer of antibiotic cream or ointment. Appropriate topical antibiotics can be found at any drugstore in the Vancouver Island area. Next, you should cover your child’s wound with a bandage. When the bandage becomes wet or dirty it should be changed. Once a wound has healed enough to keep infection out, bandages should not be used since air exposure will speed your child’s healing.

Remember to watch for signs of infection such as redness, drainage, increased pain, swelling, or warmth. Contact your North America, Vancouver Island, or worldwide area pediatrician if you have any other concerns.

SpongeBob Doesn’t Care About Your Victoria & Vancouver Child’s Health

SpongeBob Doesn't Care About Your Victoria & Vancouver Child's Health

National and local Victoria & Vancouver food advertisers can sabotage your Vancouver Island child’s health. Food manufacturers, like most Victoria & Vancouver corporations, are motivated by profit, not by what’s best for Vancouver Island kids.

Their tools are deceptive language, cartoon characters, celebrities, and false promises of popularity. Vancouver Island parents can help youth better handle the constant media barrage by teaching them:

The components of a healthy diet
The implied messages and false promises of Vancouver Island food ads
Nutritional balance and moderation
How to read and understand Victoria & Vancouver food labels
How excessive TV watching and internet viewing can affect health

If you encounter a local Vancouver Island food ad that is deceptive, contact the Victoria & Vancouver Better Business Bureau. To complain about national ads, send a letter to the Children’s Advertising Review Unit, Council of Better Business Bureaus, 845 Third Ave, New York, NY 10022.

Nothing will change until Victoria & Vancouver families unite to fight deceptive advertising aimed at Vancouver Island children. For more information on children’s nutrition in Victoria & Vancouver, call me today.

Vancouver Island Parents: Is Your Child’s Car Seat Safe?

Vancouver Island Parents: Is Your Child's Car Seat Safe?

Anyone in Vancouver Island who transports kids in their car should regularly review the child safety seat regulations. British Columbia and federal laws are periodically updated. Vancouver Island parents who think their six year-old doesn’t need to be in a booster seat may be surprised to learn that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that children stay in a booster seat until their height and weight exceed the manufacturer’s limits.

Complete recommendations can be found at http://www.nhtsa.gov/Safety/CPS

Here are some quick facts for Vancouver Island parents:

  • Keep infants and toddlers rear-facing as long as possible.
  • Upgrade child safety seat when child reaches max height and weight for each particular model.
  • Most British Columbia Wal-Mart, Target, and Babies-R-Us stores carry safety seats for all ages.
  • Vancouver Island children are ALWAYS safer in the back seat and those under twelve should never ride in the front seat.

Easy First Bike For Victoria & Vancouver Kids

Easy First Bike For Victoria & Vancouver Kids There’s a new way for Victoria & Vancouver kids to learn how to ride a bike. At first glance, balance or no-pedal bikes look just like any other kid’s bike. Look closer, however, and you notice that they are missing something: pedals.

In my Vancouver Island neighborhood cul-de-sac, I have seen toddlers as young as two hop on these bikes, scoot around for a few minutes and in no time at all, they are balancing like a pro. Victoria & Vancouver balance bike sellers say that when a child is ready for the real thing, no training wheels are required.

If you are interested in getting a no-pedal bike for your child, don’t buy a size up. Both of your child’s feet should be firmly planted on the ground when he or she is sitting on the seat.

I promote children’s health and fitness in Victoria & Vancouver and sell a nutritional product that many Vancouver Island families enjoy. To learn about the top children’s nutrition pick of the year, call or email me today.
